This project, Federal Highway Administration Exploratory Advanced Research Program for Topic 1D: Partial Automation for Truck Platooning (Caltrans/UC Berkeley PATH), will develop strategies and explore technologies for implementing truck platooning in commercial settings while maintaining or exceeding current safety levels.

  • Identification and analysis of trucking industry needs and opportunities for platooning
  • Analyses of vehicle dynamics and vehicle control strategies
  • Assessments of possible operating strategies
  • Assessments of possible safety performance
  • Traffic simulation studies to assess the value of specific operational concepts
  • Design and truck cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC) and driver interface for driver management and operation
  • Instrument vehicles and conduct testing and evaluation of driver acceptance, energy consumption, and traffic impacts
  • Conduct two public demonstrations of three-truck platoons

This research project proposes innovative truck platooning concepts, characterizes the strengths and weaknesses of particular strategies, and researches criteria for truck platooning to be accepted by fleet operators and drivers.

Outcomes

  • To develop operational concepts and scenarios for how platooning would play out in a real-world setting
  • To explore barriers to deployment, either technical, institutional, or market adoption, based on the various scenarios
